It Always Happens on the Worst Day
You wake up on a July morning in Cumming and your thermostat reads 82°F indoors. Your AC is running — you can hear it — but nothing is happening. Sound familiar? This is one of the most common calls we get at Cool Season Heating and Cooling every summer, and there are a handful of specific reasons it happens.
The Most Common Reasons Your AC Loses Cooling Capacity
- Dirty or clogged air filter — When the filter is choked with Georgia pollen and dust, airflow through the system drops sharply. The evaporator coil freezes over, and your AC blows warm air. Check and replace your filter first.
- Low refrigerant (refrigerant leak) — Refrigerant is what actually makes the air cold. If your system is low, it cannot absorb enough heat from your indoor air. This is a job for a licensed technician.
- Frozen evaporator coil — Usually caused by low refrigerant or a dirty filter. When the coil ices over, no cold air can pass through. Turn the system to ‘fan only’ for a few hours, then call us.
- Dirty or blocked condenser coils — Your outdoor unit needs to release heat into the outside air. If the coils are caked in dirt or debris, heat transfer fails and the system can’t cool properly.
- Failing capacitor or compressor — The compressor is the heart of your AC. When it or its capacitor begins to fail, the system runs but doesn’t cool. This is a repair that needs a professional immediately.
Georgia Heat Makes This Worse
Cumming summers routinely hit 95–100°F with high humidity. When outdoor temps spike, your AC has to work significantly harder. A system that barely kept up in mild weather will fail outright when it’s this hot. This is why a pre-season tune-up in April or May is so valuable — it catches these issues before they become emergencies.
What to Do Right Now
- Check your thermostat — make sure it’s set to COOL, not FAN only
- Replace your air filter if it looks gray or clogged
- Check the outdoor unit — clear away any leaves, grass, or debris from around it
- Check the circuit breaker — sometimes a tripped breaker is the simple fix
- If none of that works, call a licensed HVAC technician
